VISIT

THORPENESS

Originally created as a sea-side holiday resort, this picture postcard village is dominated by the Mere, an impressive sight, especially as the sun is setting. You can go boating or canoeing with the family, feed the many swans, ducks and geese, visit the tearooms, do some light souvenir shopping, or visit the beach. It makes for a fun day out with the family. Thorpeness also features the ‘House in the Clouds’ and historic windmill, both set next to its well established and beautifully landscaped golf course.

WHAT TO DO

To get the most out of your visit to Thorpeness, we’ve selected some of the most popular things to see and do whilst you’re there.

And feed the ever hungry swans

A favourite pass time of visitors and locals alike is to hire a rowing boat or canoe on the mere. There is a plethora of bird life (that enjoys being fed) throughout the year and lots of quiet corners and islands to explore around the mere.

ENJOY THE BEACH

Just a stones throw from Aldeburgh

A pebble beach at high tide, with a sandy shoreline at low tide, Thorpeness village almost sits on the beach itself. A lovely spot to enjoy a sunny day with the family with just a short walk to amenities and cafes.

ADMIRE THE ARCHITECTURE

Unique, quaint and eye-catching

The village of Thorpeness has a very recognisable architectural style. One house in particular which stands out above the rest is the House in the Clouds, which can be seen all the way from nearby Aldeburgh.

DINING OUT

With pubs, cafe, snack bars and restaurants there are lots of dining opportunities in Thorpeness. If you are looking for something quick but filling, The Kitchen is an ever popular cafe in the centre of Thorpeness serving hot meals and snacks throughout the day. Evening meals can be enjoyed at The Dolphin and Thorpeness Country Club. The mere cafe provides a wonderful view of the mere with coffee, tea cake and snacks served during the day.
